Thawing out a frozen turkey takes considerable time and caution so you get it right. If done properly, you get to enjoy a very scrumptious meal. However even if there is a slight mistake or if left for too long, the turkey can go bad and it would be a waste.

If your turkey has been completely thawed, it should remain edible for at least four days, according to the USDA. This is applicable if no other perishable food items are stored in the same refrigerator space as the turkey.

But if something perishable was stored with the turkey, then it would only last for about three days before becoming unsafe to eat.

To ensure your turkey is thawed properly and completely, remove any remaining ice from the cavity of the turkey. You can do so by cutting away the skin and gently tugging it until the entire turkey is free of ice.

Also, ensure you remove any remaining ice from the giblets and neck area. Do not allow the turkey to touch anything else at this point as it could contaminate anything else it touches.

Once the turkey is completely thawed, pat it dry with paper towels so that it does not drip any liquid onto other foods in the fridge. You can also wrap the turkey in aluminum foil to prevent the turkey from dripping. After that, you can cook the turkey or place it back into its packaging and freeze it if there’s a change of plans.

A 10-pound turkey takes anywhere from 36 to 72 hours to completely defrost. Also, when choosing a turkey size, remember that smaller birds are less expensive. So if you are on a budget, you should go with a smaller bird.

What Is the Safety Way to Thaw Turkey?

There are two ways to thaw a turkey safely and hygienically. The first involves placing the turkey in a covered container full of cold water. The other option is to place the turkey in a bowl full of ice.

Both methods are efficient, but the latter is probably safer. If you decide to use the cold water method, make sure the turkey is wrapped in an air-tight plastic bag so that water does not enter the bag.

After removing the turkey from its packaging, dip it in the water and allow it to soak for at least six hours. Then transfer it to a bowl or sink filled with cool water. Keep the turkey submerged in the new bowl for another six hours before transferring it to a refrigerator drawer.
